What is an AMT profession?

For those who like airplanes but do not intend to fly, to be surrounded with airplanes is also an option.

For those who like airplanes but do not intend to fly, to be surrounded with airplanes is also an option. The AMT program assigns an appropriate license and qualification to the participants, making them able to operate on a variety of aircrafts.

An Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) is responsible for the safety and repair of the aircraft, allowing the planes continuous flight. This profession implies manual dexterity and knowledge to preserve the aircraft in the best operating conditions, through scheduled maintenance or occasional services. The technician has to recognise and identify faults or problems in the aircraft, working with the electrical, mechanical and other components of the airplane. In Portugal, it is a scarce occupation but with a wide professional offer and remuneration, proportional to the qualifications.

To pursue this specific career, IFA offers a modern training system with face-to-face and distance learning – when applicable, in order to respond to the needs of the students. Added to the course, it is also possible to complete an internship to develop the necessary skills and apply the knowledge in real work context.

One can choose the B1.1 course, which consists in the maintenance of turbine aircraft, or the B1.2 program concerning piston aircraft. It is also possible to combine and take both courses (B1.1+B1.2), obtaining a double certification.
